Minneriya Safari, What to Expect.
Established in 1997, the park which spans approximately 8,889 hectares is home to a plethora of wildlife. From Sri Lankan leopards, sloth bears, sambar deer, and fleets of toque macaques to birds of all different colours and sizes with over 160 species, including painted storks, grey herons, and the endemic Sri Lanka junglefowl. The park's wetlands also support reptiles like mugger crocodiles and Indian pythons, contributing to its dense ecological richness.
The Elephant Gathering
One of the park's most extraordinary events is "The Gathering," occurring during the dry season from July to September. During this time, hundreds of elephants migrate to the Minneriya Tank, an ancient reservoir, in search of water and fresh grass. This congregation, sometimes numbering over 300 elephants, is considered one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles. Visitors can observe these majestic creatures bathing, feeding, and socializing in their natural habitat.

Exploring Minneriya is best done through guided jeep safaris, offering close encounters with wildlife amidst diverse landscapes. Morning safaris provide cooler temperatures, a stunning skyline with the rising sun and active animal sightings.
Evening tours offer the golden hues of sunset, ideal for photography. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding during the migratory season, with numerous species flocking to the park's wetlands
The park is crucial for the sustenance of Sri Lanka’s ever threatened wildlife which is why sustainable tourist practices and community engagement are essential to ensure the wellbeing of the park and its inhabitants.
